Two associates of Brookdale Senior Living, one of the largest owners and operators of senior living communities, have been honored nationally through the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) recently.
Lorinda Nicol, an LPN and Health and Wellness Director at Clare Bridge Spokane, a Brookdale Senior Living Alzheimer’s/dementia care community, was honored with a Hero Award by ALFA. ALFA called for nominations of workers in the assisted living sector, including anyone who has shown extraordinary dedication, courage or leadership.
In nominating Nicol, Pat Johnson, the executive director of Clare Bridge Spokane praises Nicol as the best friend to all the residents. As Johnson says, "Laughter and joy are just a few the many tools Lorinda uses to ease the anguish of our residents. How wonderful to know that your nurse is your best friend, someone you can count on, someone who makes your aches go away and wipes your tears, someone who truly cares."
Johnson sums ups Nicol’s dedication and talent by writing, "A nurse wants to heal, a nurse wants to fix, but with dementia, there is no cure. As a dementia practitioner, Lorinda knows it is more than managing meds…it is about creating many moments where there is less loss and more hope, even for an hour.
Each day she provides compassion to those with a disease that is frightening as it takes away all that we hold precious as human beings. She seeks solutions where others have given up, asking how instead of saying it can’t be done. She is a servant leader of nurses and caregivers who make a difference." Nicol was presented the Hero Award at the National ALFA Meeting in Phoenix, May 25-27, 2010.
In addition, Clarice Kinard, Clare Bridge Program Coordinator for Homewood Residence Richmond Heights, a Brookdale Senior Living assisted living and Alzheimer’s/dementia care community in Ohio, was chosen to debut her singing talents in ALFA’s 25th Anniversary music video. The song is "Every Day We Make a Difference," and details the hard work and caring of those in the senior living industry. The video can be viewed at http://www.alfa.org/everyday
